if it makes you feel any better i knew this sort of thing had happened to steve in the past, but he pretty much literally died whenever you brought it up. i think i was mostly spared the public eye since i was never actually, y'know, a superhero or an avenger

[ no glowing headlines or heroic poses for lieutenant barnes in the greater public eye, post-wwii. there were probably some people out there who felt some kind of way about the winter soldier, but he 1000% did not want to know about them. ]
